Fasting is not starvation or deprivation. Quite the contrary. It is giving your body and digestive tract a rest and cleanse. You will be getting plenty of essential nutrients, immunity boosting phytochemicals, phytonutrients, and vitamins and minerals. I recommend a juice fast once a week. Pick a day of the week.
I recommend that if you have never tried a “fast,” you undertake a one day fast with the schedule below. If you wish to try a 3 day fast, you can use the same schedule as well. If you already eat a plant-based diet, this is going to be much easier for you to carry out.
The fast: One wants to drink 48-96 ounces of juice daily with at least half of the juice being green vegetable based. Green veggies contain chlorophyll which helps cleanse, nourish, and heal the digestive tract.
A typical day:
Drink an 8 oz glass of water (room temp or lukewarm) with lemon and perhaps even a touch of cayenne.
After 20-30 minutes, drink 16-20 ounces of green juice slowly.
After each juice drink, you can sip water and/or herbal tea unsweetened or with just a bit of agave nectar if you prefer your tea a bit sweet.
Mid AM: Drink 16-20 ounces of green juice
Lunch: 16-20 ounces of green juice again or another veggie juice like carrot or beet.
Mid afternoon: Guess what????? 16-20 ounces of green juice.
Dinner: You guessed it.
Remember to always drink the water or an herbal tea between juices. I prefer drinking more water than tea.
To optimize the absorption of nutrients, drink each juice slowly rather than gulping it down. Juices should be consumed approximately 1-2 hours apart. The final beverage of the day should be at least 3 hours before bedtime!
